Adult Reader Volunteer

Do you enjoy reading? Would you like to help others to read?

We are looking for volunteers who would like to help adults in Blackburn and Darwen to gain the reading skills they need in everyday life and work.

The volunteer coach will be linked with an adult who wants to improve their reading, the pair will meet on a one-to-one basis to develop reading skills and confidence. The time and place will be negotiated to suit the individuals and the use of local facilities such as the learning centres or libraries will be supported by the volunteer coordinator.

Days and times of meeting a learner is flexible and negotiated and agreed between the people involved.

Tasks:

  • Follow a set reading scheme
  • Support an adult to read on a one-to-one basis
  • Record progress
  • Report to volunteer co-ordinator
  • Log volunteering hours via an on-line computer system

Required Qualities:

  • Enjoy reading
  • Have patience and understanding
  • Be friendly and approachable
  • Be reliable and committed

Training:

This role is subject to DBS clearance.

Training will be provided to support the delivery of ‘Turning Pages’ which is a phonics-based reading programme suitable for adults.

Volunteers are required to complete mandatory and bespoke training.
