Community Garden Volunteer

Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council Adult Learning Service provide a range of courses and projects for adults experiencing mild to moderate mental health issues around stress, anxiety, low mood and depression.  The courses are developed to assist people to better self-manage their mental health.

The Community Garden at Bank Top is always on the lookout for volunteers to help maintain and grow in our space.  Whether you are a keen gardener with experience or a novice who is keen to get involved we have a wide variety of activities including sowing, planting, weeding, watering and general maintenance of the plot.  Our volunteer sessions provide the opportunity to get outside and grow whilst also socialising and learning.

The Community Garden Volunteer will assist with the maintenance and development of the Community Garden at Bank Top.

  • Maintaining garden area and beds around Bank Top
  • Assist with groups attending the wellbeing courses in the garden area if interested
  • Log volunteering hours via an on-line computer system

Required Qualities:

  • An interest in gardening and outside spaces and some previous experience
  • Willingness to follow a plan and work safely
  • Trustworthy to keep space secure
  • Able to work alongside others in a small group


  • Induction training
  • Ongoing supervision with Volunteer Co-ordinator key contact (frequency to be agreed, depending on type and hours of volunteer activity / volunteer experience, skills and background.
  • Ongoing training based on needs identified through supervision; peer volunteer meetings.
