VOLUNTEERING INTO A PERMANENT JOB AT JUDGE’S LODGINGS!
Daniel Greene is a perfect example of how volunteering can lead to greater things.
He started volunteering as a Room Steward at Judge’s Lodgings Museum in Lancaster in the summer of 2022, before securing employment with the museum 12 months later in a part-time permanent role.
The experience Daniel enjoyed most about volunteering was “Being able to educate and teach people about the history of the house.
I have always loved learning and imparting my knowledge onto others gave me just that. As many of our visitors are locals it is rewarding for me to tell them about the history of this city, including aspects that may be new or surprising to them. It also helped give me confidence in speaking to members of the public and it helped me feel significantly less nervous during my interview when I applied for a permanent, paid role.”
The advice Daniel would give to those considering volunteering is to “Go for it! I enjoyed my time as a volunteer massively. If you have a busy schedule, you can adapt your hours around them, I volunteered around my university studies without any troubles.”
Assistant Manager, Helen Gregory told us, “Daniel is a great advocate for the history of Lancaster and has a vast knowledge which he shares passionately with our visitors when engaging with them. He is very comfortable around people of different ages which is important when we’re a ‘Kids Friendly’ museum. He is equally at home assisting our new volunteers with gaining knowledge about the museum collections and making them feel valued and welcome which strengthens the relationship between volunteers and staff and helps to create a ‘happy’ team.”
