Befrienders at Thornton House
Do you have a few hours a week spare to become one of our befrienders at Thornton House?
The benefit of having a regular meeting with a befriender helps to increase the confidence, resilience and independence of their service users.
Support from a Volunteer, listening to and encouraging others, can help make a big difference in someone’s life.
Older people services operate using quality and person-centred services which are provided in a safe way for all residents, staff, volunteers and visitors.
This volunteering role is subject to a DBS check. To qualify you must have been a resident in the UK for the past 3 years.
- Applicants must be willing to go through an induction process with relevant background checks and an enhanced DBS check (This will be done free of charge)
- Once you have applied online one of our Volunteer Officers will be in contact to arrange your DBS
Days and times to be agreed with Lexie Smith, Thornton House manager.
Tasks:
As a befriender you will:
- Actively support, encourage and empower others to achieve specified and agreed goals and objectives.
- Encouraged & spend some time chatting to residents and possibly sharing your hobbies/ interests therefore helping to combat feelings of loneliness and helping to brighten up a resident’s day.
- Log volunteering hours monthly on-line
- Complete minimum level training e.g. safeguarding and commit to further training relevant to role
Required Qualities:
Befriending volunteers need to:
- Be good communicators
- Be committed to providing a good service
- Be patience
- Adhere to confidentiality guidelines
- Be friendly and have an approachable manner
- Have knowledge and awareness of dementia issues
Training:
Training will be provided in the form of distance eLearning.
Volunteers must have completed the required training before any activity can be undertaken and will be asked to regularly refresh training when required.
