Supporting a man with Down’s Syndrome – Domiciliary Service

The Domiciliary Service provides a range of support to adults with learning disabilities who live with other people with Learning Disabilities and support from Domiciliary Service Staff. The level of support offered varies between each individual in line with their assessed needs.

  • We are looking for a volunteer to support a friendly 42 year old man who lives in Morecambe to access various leisure activities.  He enjoys snooker, pool, dancing, dining and exploring new activities. As a befriending volunteer you are encouraged to share your hobbies/interests.
  • The volunteer would take part in the activities alongside the person, to support him from his home and return, using public transport.
  • The service would provide a good induction and ensure any volunteer was well supported and confident before supporting the person.

Required Qualities:

Befriending volunteers need to:

  • Female volunteers preferred (but this isn’t essential!)
  • Volunteers should be a non-smoker
  • Be over the age of 18
  • Have good communication skills
  • Be reliable
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Be sensitive and patient
  • Be open and non judgmental

As this opportunity involves working with vulnerable adults, volunteers will need to have an enhanced Disclosure and Barring (DBS) disclosure (there will be no cost to the volunteer for this).


Training will be provided where necessary and may be in the form of peer support, distance learning or trainer led. Volunteers must have completed the required training before any activity can be undertaken and may be asked to regularly refresh training where required.
